Nationals agree to terms with 2nd round pick Destin Hood
Thursday 07-17-2008 2:38pm ET
Destin Hood, 18, agreed to terms with the Nationals today and will be assigned to the Nationals' Gulf Coast League affiliate in Viera, FL. Hood is a standout football player as well and had signed a letter of intent to play football and baseball at the University of Alabama.
Hood attended St. Paul's Episcopal High School in Mobile, AL, where he was an outfielder and wide receiver on the football team. In baseball, he batted .485 with 8 HRs, 32 RBIs, and 17 SBs and was also selected as a 1st team All-American by USA Today. Hood also earned Alabama Sports Writers Association's 5A Player of the Year and Player of the Year honors by the Mobile Press-Register.
On the football field, Hood caught 56 passes for 995 yards and 15 TDs as he helped lead St. Paul's to the 5A Alabama State Title.
The Nationals have now agreed to terms with 25 players selected in this year's Draft but Hood was the first player drafted in the top 5 rounds to sign with the Nats. The Nationals were able to sign the first 19 players selected in last year's draft and they hope to have the same success this year.
Nats start 3 game set with the Braves tomorrow night
Thursday 07-17-2008 11:49am ET
Nationals head to Atlanta for a 3 game set with their division rival the Braves. The Nats are leading the season series 5 to 3 against the Braves.
Probable Starters
Friday July 18- Tim Redding (WAS) 7-3 vs. Jair Jurrjens (ATL) 9-4
Saturday July 19- John Lannan (WAS) 5-9 vs. Tim Hudson (ATL) 9-7
Sunday July 20- Odalis Perez (WAS) 2-7 vs. Jo-Jo Reyes (ATL) 3-8
Note: Even though the records look bad for the Nationals starters, Redding (3.85), Lannan (3.40), and Perez (3.71) all have very respectable ERAs.
